Everglades Birding Tour: American Crocodile

Once hunted almost into extinction, the shy, reclusive American Crocodile is making a slow comeback in Everglades National Park. American crocodiles are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, except in Florida, where they are listed as threatened. South Florida - and Everglades National Park are the only place both Alligators and Crocodiles exist. American crocodiles inhabit brackish and saltwater estuaries and are typically found in coastal mangrove wetlands and creeks and while rare - can often be seen on a tour - especially on a cool day when the sun warms the mud banks and the crocs come out to sun. Often times they will be seen partially hidden in the mangrove prop roots that line the shores. Its amazing how such a large animal can blend in! To return to the Bird List click here.
